Bucknor to create history next month
published: Wednesday | February 23, 2005

Bucknor

LONDON (Reuters):

STEVE BUCKNOR will become the first umpire to stand in 100 Tests next month during the second Test between India and Pakistan.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said Bucknor would take charge of the match alongside Darrell Hair in Calcutta between March 16 and 20

The ICC will mark Bucknor's achievement with a 'Golden Bails Award'. Bronze bails are awarded for 100 one-day international appearances and silver bails for 200 one-dayers.

The 58-year-old Jamaican's first major match as an umpire was the fourth Test between West Indies and India in Kingston, Jamaica in April 1989.

Known for his lengthy deliberation before reprieving batsmen or raising the finger, he has been nicknamed 'Slow Death Bucknor'.

Widely respected, he has officiated in 131 one-dayers and four consecutive World Cups, taking charge of the final each time.

England's David Shepherd is the next most experienced Test umpire with 86 matches.
