Simpson takes three winners

SIMPSON

CHAMPION JOCKEY Trevor Simpson rode three winners at Caymanas Park yesterday, among them the even-money favourite CRIMSON MAGIC in the mile and quarter feature for the Altamont V. Armond Memorial Cup for $260,000 - $220,000 claimers.

The 36-year-old jockey, who is hunting his fourth consecutive title, also won aboard 6-5 chance TO BE CONTINUED for trainer Heaton Thomas in the second race over 1300 metres and 2-5 favourite SARAH'S FRIEND for trainer Wayne DaCosta in the third race for imported three-year-olds and up over the straight five course.

Simpson had to summon all the skills at his disposal in order to bring home TO BE CONTINUED by a nose from long-time leader BUCKEISHA after looking second best a furlong out. He also had to dig deep in the closing stages aboard the speedy American filly SARAH'S FRIEND to stave off the fast-finishing SIT O under Florida-based Jamaican jockey Allen Maragh.

In the feature race, CRIMSON MAGIC was always prominently placed on the rails as the grey MR. LONGINO (3-1) made most under Larris Allen in the seven-strong field.

MR. LONGINO left the half mile about three lengths clear of CRIMSON MAGIC hard ridden, followed by 99-1 outsider MAMA'S GIRL, who led early, and the well-backed pair of ASYNJUR (3-1) and SIR MOHANDAS BABA (8-5) not far off.

MR. LONGINO turned for home (wide) just marginally ahead of CRIMSON MAGIC on the outside, but Simpson was made to work overtime before gaining the ascendancy midway the last furlong, going on to win by 1 3/4 lengths.

SIR MOHANDAS BABA, who improved his position to have every chance on the inside approaching the distance, failed to carry through the effort and ended up third, another three lengths adrift, while SQUARE GARDEN (lame) was declared a late non-starter at the gates, reducing the field to seven.

CRIMSON MAGIC is owned by Noel Ennevor and trained by Tensang Chung. Bred by Cedric Salmon, the consistent 7-y-o bay gelding by Splinter Red out of Bag Of Diamonds, notched his first win since June 16 last year when landing the W. 'Billy' Pick Memorial Cup over this very trip with Simpson astride. He was then trained by Richie Todd.

Earlier in the afternoon, the lightly raced three-year-old colt I AM PAID FOR opened his account in fine style, winning the circular nine maiden raced by 4 3/4 lengths despite running green. Installed a a 7-5 favourite with the improving apprentice Andron Findley riding for trainer Welsh Soutar, I AM PAID FOR found himself badly outpaced for the first half of the race as the 40-1 outsider MR. Q.G.P. made most ahead of highly fancied SIR KHAN who went through leaving the 600-metre mark. By then I AM PAID FOR had begun to make rapid headway and after turning for home second, stormed through on the inside in a flash to win easily from the fast-finishing O' ME O' MY with Simpson astride. Nine ran.

In the eighth race over the straight five course, hot favourite PRINCESS CHIONESO made most but in the end just held on from the grey gelding SEAGAR who stayed on strongly towards the stands' side in a field of 13 four-year-olds and up, non winners of three.

PRINCESS CHIONESO was ridden by veteran lightweight jockey Robert Reid for owner/trainer Kenrick McIntosh.

Apprentice Dalton Brown, who has shown marked improved n recent months, booted home two winners in Richie Todd's RED GENERAL and 14-1 chance CRIME OF PASSION in the first and last races respectively.

Brown, who moves to six winners this season to be joint fifth in the standings, produced RED GENERAL (7-5) with a sustained run on the rails to catch RED BOOTLACES within shades of the wire. He won aboard RED GENERAL for the third time in just under a year.
