Her Royal Highness Princess Anne greets Governor-General Sir Howard Cooke at the Norman Manley International Airport yesterday. Also present to meet her was Peter Mathers (left), British high commissioner.Her Royal Highness Princess Anne yesterday arrived in the island for a three-day official visit.
The only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II, the Princess Royal will officiate at the 50th anniversary celebrations and rededication of the Princess Margaret Hospital in St. Thomas today.
Princess Margaret, who died on February 9, 2002, was the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth.
On her arrival in a private jet at 4:45 p.m. at the Norman Manley International Airport, Princess Anne was greeted by Governor-General, Sir Howard Cooke; British High Commissioner, Peter Mathers; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Gilbert Kameka; Chief of Protocol, Sandra Griffiths; Aide-de-Camp to the governor-general, Captain Mahatma Williams along with other government officials and members of the diplomatic corps.
She was quickly whisked off to King's House where she met with the staff. Later that evening, the princess met with John Junor, minister of health and Dr. Ken Baugh, leader of the Opposition.
While in the island, Princess Anne will also visit several inner-city communities including Rose Town, Jones Town, Trench Town and Rema.
As president of Save the Children U.K., she will also visit Children First in Spanish Town, St. Catherine which is an affiliate of the U.K.- based agency. She will also visit U.K.-funded post Hurricane Ivan projects, such as developments at Portland Cottage in Clarendon and Kingston Restoration Company initiatives.
