In the true spirit of Peace Day, a student lends a helping hand to a classmate at the Peace and Love in Society (PALS) Peace Day Assembly held yesterday at the Denham Town Primary School, western Kingston.

THE MESSAGE of peace echoed throughout the Denham Town Primary School yesterday where hundreds of students, parents and teachers gathered in unity to promote peace, love and respect in the society.

The special assembly marked the beginning of Peace Month. It was held under the theme: "Peace, let it start with you and me" and was organised by the school and Peace and Love in Society (PALS), the decade-long peace programme, which was established to change attitudes and promote conflict resolution as a societal norm.

Despite the scorching morning sun, students decked out in their blue ribbons and head bands, waved their hands in unity singing and shouting for peace.

Brief speeches of peace came from Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) leader Senator Bruce Golding, and also the Ministry of Justice.

"We are living in a society where we are reminded of violence and conflict", Senator Golding told the students. He charged them to become missionaries of peace and to take back the peace message into their communities "for a new and peaceful Jamaica". The senator applauded PALS and the school for their efforts in endorsing the message of peace and noted that anything that can be done to break the culture of violence and conflict is significant.
