Deregulate sponsorship investments
published: Wednesday | March 2, 2005
THE EDITOR, Sir:IN A recent article 'Sponsors and Sponsorship', (Jamaica Glenear, February 25, 2005), Howard Hamilton is certainly correct in his view that financial contributions of sponsors are fundamental to sporting activities, and both sponsors and the sponsored must understand their role if the relationship is to be successful.
However, the article clearly missed the point that potential benefits are created with new sponsorship investments. It is short-sighted in any sport or business activity not to recognise that competition drives positive development. Competition should be embraced because it leads to innovation and growth.
Telecommunications is a great example of successful competition. Look at what has been accomplished across the Caribbean as a result of deregulation and the end of century-old monopolies. We should expect the same success from sponsorships. Why should we, as Caribbean nations, be satisfied with the status quo? Let's stop creating barriers to investment in our communities and sports, and focus on providing benefits that attract companies to the Caribbean, which ultimately has a major impact on our economy.
