Ignore the DJ's - Commissioner
published: Thursday | March 3, 2005

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN

COMMISSIONER OF Police Lucius Thomas told students of the Waterford High School in Portmore that they need to listen to good advice, and not only be influenced by entertainers.

The commissioner said that he could not have missed the Peace Day parade at the school on Tuesday as he realised that many in their age group were at risk. He said young males are also high on the delinquency list as they have committed over 205 rapes or other sexual offences.

The commissioner said he finds it necessary to say this as many of those under 17 years old are very influenced by entertainers. He told them that intelligence gathered by the police suggested that several entertainers are involved in gun crimes and other violent endeavours.

He said from 2000 to 2004, youngsters under 17 years old have been responsible for 165 murders and more than 200 other violent crimes.

In an interview with The Gleaner, the commissioner said that he felt compelled to speak to the children. He said, "I think that I would have to be here to do my little piece to help save Jamaica."
