Solid waste body settles claims with contractors
published: Friday | March 4, 2005

Joseph Cunningham, Gleaner Writer

SIMPSON MILLER

THE NATIONAL Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has dedicated a sum of J$64 million to settle the claims of its contractors.

The move followed protests by employees of the contractors and a meeting with Minister of Local Government, Community Development and Sport, Portia Simpson Miller, on Tuesday. Minister Simpson Miller directed that outstanding money owed to garbage collection contractors be paid.

Ministry officials told The Gleaner yesterday morning that $40 million had been disbursed on Wednesday, while an additional $24 million was to be disbursed yesterday to pay contractors, their employees and to cover disposal site costs.

Minister Simpson Miller has requested a review of the operations and funding requirements of the NSWMA. No date has been set for the review meeting.

Protesters told The Gleaner on Tuesday that they had received information that the management of the NSWMA had received the balance of their contracted wages but had refused to pay them.
