'Exploit the national strength of St Bess'
published: Friday | March 4, 2005

BLACK RIVER, St. Elizabeth

UP TO $3 billion worth of investment has resulted from the efforts of the St. Elizabeth Homecoming Foundation (SEHF) over the last five years, says director George Watson.

Mr. Watson said one of the main achievements was the training of 300 persons in the hospitality industry, the majority of which have been absorbed by the overseas hotel programme. He was speaking at a business symposium, hosted by the SEHF at the Invercauld hotel recently.

REPLANTING PROGRAMME

Dedicated to the development of St. Elizabeth, the organisation has spent $1 million on a replanting programme at Holland Bamboo while another $3 million was spent on drain cleaning, he said. As well, $1.5 million was issued as a one-time school fee payment and another $1.5 million to provide food for victims of Hurricane Ivan.

"It is imperative for business to be an integral part of the homecoming development of the parish," said guest speaker Ryland Campbell of Capital and Credit Merchant Bank.

The foundation needs to, "look to exploit the national strength of the parish," Mr. Campbell said, and it should examine, " new ways of doing old things."
