Haitians return to shelter
published: Tuesday | March 8, 2005

Gareth Davis, Gleaner Writer.

PORT ANTONIO, Portland:THE 15 Haitian refugees who cut their way through a perimeter fence at the Winnifred Rest Home in Fairy Hill, Portland, on Sunday have returned to the shelter.

Police sources told The Gleaner yesterday that a head count conducted revealed that the missing Haitians had returned.

The police in the meantime have indicated that additional security will have to be put in place in order to prevent future breakouts.

On Sunday, Francz Deilas, a Haitian at the shelter, told The Gleaner that his colleagues cut the fence and made their way out to purchase food, because they were hungry. He claimed that the rations they received at the shelter were insufficient.

One hundred and seventy-three Haitians are currently housed at the Winnifred shelter.
