LETTER OF THE DAY - Woman, be proud
published: Tuesday | March 8, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir: ON THIS International Women's Day, I believe that every woman who has done her best for her children, for the nation and those around her, should be proud that she is trying to change their surroundings in which she lives; she is trying to change negative thoughts with words and deeds. In this way, she has become an icons a persons to be emulated.

Many women are conscious of the fact that they are leaders; they are the bearers of children who either do good or bad deeds. There is much evidence now, though, that most women are not capable anymore to deal with their children. As a consequence, there is a remarkable decline in discipline, love and, moreover, proper attire.

As the years pass, I realise that women are dressing more cheaply, even those who are older and should be setting examples for the younger people. But, their minds have reached a peak of not knowing who they are.

Maternity dresses are gone on a permanent vacation and skimpy tight skirts and dresses are an abomination to the eyes. I do not think the mirror is good enough because I am sure if some pregnant women knew how they looked, and how the foetus seems like it is stifling them, surely, they would not dress that way, especially when their bellies are exposed.

I am left dazed and shocked to see the mothers and daughters of today, competing with whose clothes should be a finger tip below the bottom. Women are to assess themselves before they wear those types of clothing; the corded legs, the varicose veins, and the stretch marks; they are just left for a laugh especially to the men, who most times look and say terrible things about "dem gal dey nuh joke, a wha she luk like" or "a wha granny dey luk".

Women, look into yourselves, start on a different path. Women are strong. Move forward, although times are hard, think positively and you can be one of the best persons around. Just give God thanks for each day and pray for a change as each day breathes fresh air in our souls. Ask God for guidance for your children as you try to counsel them in being better men and women of tomorrow. LOVE.

I am, etc.,

BARBARA DIXON
