Petrina Francis, Gleaner Writer A TWO-YEAR-OLD child was burnt to death on Sunday when fire gutted a one-bedroom house on Airy Castle Road, Stony Hill.
Devon Pinnock perished in the blaze and his four-year-old sibling, Devonte Pinnock, was injured and has been admitted to hospital in serious condition.
The Constabulary Communication Network reported that Henry Pinnock, father of the children, left them at home about 10:00 a.m and went next door to sell cigarettes. Mr. Pinnock was alerted by neighbours that the house was on fire and rushed to the house, which was already engulfed in flames.
SIBLING RESCUED
He kicked open a rear door and was able to pull Devonte from the raging heat, but was unable to rescue Devon. Mr. Pinnock was also injured in the fire. He was treated and released from hospital.
The Stony Hill police could not confirm the fire's origin. When a Gleaner news team visited the community yesterday, a pile of charred rubble told the story of the gruesome incident which took young Devon's life.
FATHER MAY BE CHARGED
The children's father was unavailable for comment as our news team was told that he was at the hospital with Devonte.
Constable Fitz Fearol of the Stony Hill Police Station told The Gleaner that Mr. Pinnock is likely to be charged for negligence. The police were unable to give information about the children's mother but one resident said the mother and Mr. Pinnock had an argument Sunday morning and she packed her bags and left.
The death of young Devon comes three weeks after a three-year-old and a six-year-old were burnt beyond recognition in Duhaney Park after they were left at home alone by their mother who had gone to work. She was later charged by the police.
