JAMAICA MADE good their promise of winning the regional Carib Beer Series cricket league and the US$12,500 cash prize, with a decisive 245-run victory over Barbados at Chedwin Park yesterday.

Score: Jamaica 522 for nine declared and 159 for eight declared; Barbados 214 and 222.

Going into the match on 71 points after five straight victories under acting captain Tamar Lambert, followed by first innings loss in a drawn match, a rain-ruined affair and then a loss after leading on first innings under captain Wavell Hinds, yesterday's victory pushed Jamaica's tally to an unassailable 83 points.

With only one round the 10th and final of the home and away contest to go, with only 12 points for a win, none of the other five teams can now catch Jamaica.

SEVEN-TIME CHAMPS

Following their victories in 1969 when they won the then Shell Shield under Easton McMorris; in 1988, 1989 and 1992 when they won the Red Stripe Cup twice under Marlon Tucker and once under Courtney Walsh; and in 2000 and 2002 when they won the Busta Cup under Jimmy Adams and then under Robert Samuels, Jamaica have now won the regional four-day title seven times two times more than third-placed Guyana and 12 times less than outgoing champions Barbados.

Entering the final day of the four-day contest with Barbados on 74 for two and needing another 393 runs off a possible 101 overs, Jamaica opened up with pacer David Bernard Jnr. and right-arm legspinner Odean Brown.

Although they had to wait until 33 minutes after lunch to celebrate, the writing thanks to Bernard who finished with three wickets for 29 runs off 13 overs, and Odean Brown, who finished with three for 75 off 23 was on the wall inside 30 minutes.

Running in from the south, Bernard trapped Dale Richards leg before wicket for 19 at 77 for three in the morning's first over.

Twenty-one minutes later, Dwayne Smith, after hitting Brown over mid-wicket for two sixes, cut at the legspinner, edged a catch to wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh Jnr. and walked away for 33 off 20 deliveries at 105 for four.

In the next over, without any addition to the score, the left-handed Ryan Hinds drove at Bernard, nicked a catch to Baugh, and departed for five at 105 for five.

With the day's play starting 30 minutes early, with lunch almost two hours away and two more sessions to follow, at that stage Barbados' only hope for a draw, apart from rain, was heavily dependent on captain Courtney Browne, Jason Parris and Patrick Browne.

BROWNE OUT

One hour later, however, fast bowler Daren Powell, bowling from the north after replacing Odean Brown, ripped out Courtney Browne's offstump with a delivery that went through the gate.

That was 135 for six with Browne gone for 19, and when, after another 50 minutes, Patrick Browne, on eight, swung at Odean Brown, again bowling from the north, and skied a catch to Powell coming in from long-on, it was 165 for seven.

After lunch, Parris, who batted for 133 minutes while facing 100 deliveries, went at Odean Brown and was brilliantly caught for 36 at 179 for eight by a diving Bernard coming off the long-off boundary.

Tino Best, who slammed five sixes while enjoying himself, was stumped by Baugh off Gareth Breese for 34 at 220 for nine, and two runs later, number 11 Corey Collymore swung at Breese, missed and was leg before wicket.

Jamaica take on the Windward Islands in the 10th and final round of the league at Alpart on Friday.

Starting on March 18 at Alpart, Jamaica, bidding to win another US$5,000, will take on the league runners-up in the five-day Carib Beer Challenge match.
