THE EDITOR, Sir:
MANY PERSONS in Jamaica, I presume, are either divided on or indifferent to the whole 'Haitian crisis', let alone their refugeeing in our country.
They say, rightly, that Jamaica is small and poor and has enough problems of its own to be playing 'saviour' to another nation in turmoil. But here are some reasons for helping the Haitians:
They are our black Caribbean brothers and sisters who 'paved the way' of freedom in this part of the world (Haitian Revolution).
It is theorised by some that the Haitian situation is and was a deliberate sabotage by other 'greater' nations upset with the fact that they revolted, and inspired others to revolt, the way they did.
It is always good to help others; we may and do need help one day.
As bad as our situation is we are in a better position than they are in and should be divinely grateful for that. One way to show gratitude is by giving. And not half-heartedly, grudgingly or sparingly.
As Kahlil Gibran, author of The Prophet, wrote, 'it is not when you give of your possessions that you truly give, but when you give of yourself'.
These are just some reasons to 'truly' help the Haitians.
I am, etc.,
