Poor taste, Mr Phillips
published: Thursday | March 10, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

TEN YEARS ago at the United Nation's International Conference for Women in Beijing, China, the Report on the ascendancy of the Jamaican Women presented to this historical conference spoke of a 'ceiling' to political power to which our women could not get beyond.

Ironically, on March 8, 2005 we witnessed the endorsement of the Women's Caucus for National Development for National Security Minister Dr. Peter Phillips' bid for the presidency of the ruling People's National Party.

While we acknowledge the right for individuals and groups to support their choice for political leadership, I find such an endorsement on International Women's Day in poor taste in regards to the issues about women not being fairly represented in Jamaica, and points to the fact that the greatest obstacle to overcoming the 'ceiling' to political power is really the women themselves.

I am, etc.,

DUDLEY C. MCLEAN II
