Nurse jailed in rape scandal
published: Friday | March 11, 2005

Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

A SENIOR nurse attached to the Victoria Jubilee Hospital (VJH) in Kingston has been jailed, following allegations that she attempted to bribe a witness not to press charges against a doctor who has been implicated in a rape case. The alleged rape is said to have been committed at the hospital on February 26.

"She has been charged with attempt to pervert the course of justice," said Corporal Jean McDonald, of the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN).

The 35-year-old nurse has been identified as Janet Spence. She was arrested by Inspector Duchess Foster-Gardener, of the Centre for Investigations and Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA). Spence who is of a Kingston 6 address is scheduled to return to court on Friday, March 18.

BRIBERY

Allegations are that she showed the witness a bag containing $500,000 and demanded that the witness take the money and drop the charges against the 31-year-old doctor. The Gleaner was advised that the nurse was positively identified while giving a statement at CISOCA Ruthven Road office, Kingston. According to the police, the doctor in question is scheduled to face an identification parade today. Allegations against the doctor are that on February 26, he took a patient from Ward 5, to the hospital's Ultrasound Room for a medical examination. During the process, the patient was sexually assaulted.

Further allegations are that the doctor attempted to bribe the witness, who refused his offer.
