Police probe funeral shooting
published: Tuesday | March 15, 2005

G.S. Amos - File

HEAD OF the St. Andrew South Police Division, Superintendent Newton Amos, said the police are probing the circumstances in which a group of gunmen disrupted a funeral service, where Finance Minister Dr. Omar Davies was in attendance on Sunday.

Reports are that the minister had to be whisked away by his security detail, shortly after the shooting. Speaking with The Gleaner yesterday, Supt. Amos said had he known that the minister would be in attendance, adequate security would have been put in place.

"We were not aware that the minister would be in attendance," Amos told The Gleaner yesterday.

According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) chief internal security officer, Assistant Commissioner Glenmore Hinds, the minister is not obligated to tell anybody where he was going, or brief them about his itinerary.

"That is the responsibility of his security detail, based on their assessment," said ACP Hinds.

Dr. Davies was attending the funeral service of one of his constituents, Kawane Linton, 20, of Arnett Gardens, south St. Andrew. He was killed on March 3 and his body discovered the following day in the Calvary Cemetery, Kingston. Mr. Linton was said to be a dancer and associate of Gerald Levy, alias 'Bogle'.
