Major upsets derail Pick-9
published: Tuesday | March 15, 2005

WITH SATURDAY'S 12-race programme at Caymanas Park producing two major upsets, the Pick-9 not surprisingly eluded punters, but not the two Super-6s.

One punter with eight of nine winners collected $106,984, missing out on a million dollars in the process.

According to reports, he failed to spot the 94-1 outsider SHALOMI KUMAR in the sixth race for maiden three-year-old fillies over the straight five course.

The lightly raced daughter of Arabica out of Lady Rukmini was ridden by Andrew Thomas for owner/trainer Lazel Khwalsingh, who was pretty confident that the filly would win despite her huge odds.

After the race, 'Singh' was the toast of the trainers' room and it was drinks all around to mark the occasion.

OTHER UPSET

The other upset came in the form of ZIP UP at 26-1 in the eighth race over 1200 metres. The American five-year-old mare was ridden in post-to-post fashion by Richie Mitchell for popular owner Louis Phillips (who was abroad) and trainer Gary Subratie whose other charge, PRECOCIOUS MISS D finished second at odds of 4-1.

To cap a good day for the second generation trainer, he posted a second winner in COZY PROSPECTOR, an 8-5 favourite in the second race. The grey horse, who also went wire to wire under Trinidadian jockey Brian Harding, was Subratie's first winner of the season.

Despite other winning favourites such as FORMALLY GOLD, RAGING STORM, SI MI TRIAL, KAMIR and DANCE DIXIE obliging, the Pick-9 boasts a carryover of $1 million going into tomorrow's midweek meet.

The second Super-6, which excluded SHALOMI KUMAR, was caught by seven punters, each receiving $79,961.50.
