Gynaecologist, nurse denied bail
published: Wednesday | March 16, 2005

GYNAECOLOGIST MATT Myrie, 31, who is accused of raping a patient at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital (VJH), and nurse Janet Spence, 35, who is accused of attempting to bribe the complainant not to pursue the charges, were yesterday denied bail.

They appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Martin Gayle who ordered them to return to court tomorrow when the bail application can be renewed.

It was not clear yesterday whether the complainant was in protective custody. The RM said once he was satisfied tomorrow that the complainant was in protective custody then the lawyers could renew the bail application.

BAIL APPLICATIONS

The bail applications were made yesterday in the absence of members of the public following a request made by attorney-at-law Hugh Thompson who is representing Dr. Myrie.

Thompson said the allegations would be outlined at the bail application and therefore the parties should be afforded the same privilege of an in camera hearing which was given to persons at a rape trial.

Dr. Myrie, who is attached to VJH, is charged with two counts of rape and two counts of indecent assault. It is being alleged that on February 26 he took a patient from Ward 5 at VJH for examination in the ultrasound room where he allegedly committed the offences.

Spence, who is attached to the Kingston Public Hospital, is charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice. The Crown is alleging that she offered the complainant $500,000 not to pursue the case against Dr. Myrie.

Attorneys-at-law C. J. Mitchell and Ian Stewart are representing Spence.
