UTech issues progress reports
published: Wednesday | March 16, 2005

THE UNIVERSITY of Tech-nology (UTech) began issuing progress reports to students last Friday evening, following demonstrations by hundreds of angry students.

The students barricaded the entrance to the university, protesting the administration's failure to deliver their progress reports for examinations which they sat last semester.

Hector Wheeler, corporate communications manager at the institution, told The Gleaner on Monday that the university started delivering the progress reports to students on Friday and will continue to do so during the course of the week.

NEW ONLINE SYSTEM

He noted that the delay in the progress reports was due to a number of reasons, but largely involved a new online system which was implemented to record students' grades and other information.

Mr. Wheeler said that the university will organise resits for students who have failed.

Kenisha Linton, president of the students' union, confirmed that students have been getting their progress reports.

She noted that special accommodations would be arranged for international students who failed examinations and would need to stay behind during the summer holidays to resit.

Asked if the students' union is satisfied with the pace at which the institution is issuing the progress reports, Miss Linton said, "We are not satisfied, but based on the impediments we see that they are facing, I think that they are doing good enough."
