Dorit HutsonDORIT RUSSELL Hutson, a giant in the world of art, died yesterday at the age of 71. Ms. Hutson attended the Jamaica School of Art along with Alexander Cooper and other notable figures.
Her primary instruction came when she became a protégé of Barrington Watson, and there are echoes of his academic approach in her work. After giving up painting, she devoted herself to the broader canvas of decor, and in Jamaica she elevated interior decoration to an art form. In this area she will be remembered for her extraordinary restoration of Devon House with its 19th century interior.
Hutson was the largest contributor to the Edna Manley tsunami relief fund, for which a cheque was handed over to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) yesterday. At the function, her passing was recognised by a minute of silence.
Her funeral will take place on Saturday at St. Andrews Episcopal Church on Old Cutler Road in Miami, Florida, at 4 p.m.
