Bail offered to doctor, nurse
published: Friday | March 18, 2005

Barbara Gayle, Staff Reporter

DR. MATT Myrie, the 31-year-old gynaecologist who is accused of raping a patient at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital and Janet Spence, 35, the nurse who is accused of attempting to bribe the complainant, were both offered bail yesterday.

Dr. Myrie was offered bail in the sum of $500,000 with one or two sureties, while Spence was offered bail in the sum of $300,000 with one or two sureties.

Senior Resident Magistrate, Martin Gayle, granted them bail yesterday when they appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court. The RM imposed several conditions to their bail.

Dr. Myrie is to return to court on April 1 while Spence is to return on May 18.

The two accused are to report to the Matilda's Corner police station three times per week and are to surrender their travel documents to the police. The RM has placed stop orders on them so they cannot leave the island.

COMPLAINANT WAS THREATENED

They were denied bail on Tuesday after the court was told that the complainant was threatened. The RM said once he was satisfied that the complainant was placed in protective custody, then the bail applications could be renewed.

Dr. Myrie who is being represented by attorney-at-law Hugh Thompson, is charged with two counts of rape and two counts of indecent assault.

It is being alleged that on February 26, he committed the offences on a patient in the ultra sound room at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital where he is attached.

Spence who is represented by attorneys-at-law C. J. Mitchell and Ian Stewart, is charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice. The Crown is alleging that Spence, who is attached to the Kingston Public Hospital, had offered the complainant $500,000 to drop the case.
