THE EDITOR, Sir:
The motto of the Jamaica Police Force 'We Serve, Protect, Reassure' is simply a farce perpetrated by some members even while wearing the uniform.
I have always had the greatest respect for the officers and still do. I cite an incident however that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
On Saturday, March 5, I was walking down Wildman Street in Christiana at 1:25 p.m., when an alarm was raised and a group of youngsters sped down the street with handcart loaded with food provisions.
Suddenly a police jeep drove up and stopped in the middle of the busy thoroughfare. Out jumped a group of special policemen who began to grab the people's ground provisions on the side street. By this time, one of the handcarts knocked me over.
As I lay in the water drain I called to the officer in charge of the crew. He simply passed by.
I then called out to the other officers who shouted at me that it was not the jeep that knocked me over. To this, I replied that at least they could lend me a lifting hand; this plea was ignored.
These officers come to Christiana to 'hot it up' on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
I think that they can do much better by treating the vendors with some respect, the motorists with a little decency and controlling the traffic with a sense of purpose.
Bull-dozing their way around cannot do in a society that is gradually descending into lawlessness.
One easy way to control traffic and vendors in Christiana is to position themselves at key points and things would flow a lot easier.
I am, etc.,
