Battle for West Kgn begins
published: Wednesday | March 23, 2005

TODAY IS nomination day for the West Kingston by-election. Two candidates, Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) leader, Bruce Golding, and the People's National Party's (PNP) 'Bunny' Witter, are both expected to hand in nomination papers between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Against all odds, Mr. Witter, who has unsuccessfully contested the West Kingston seat against former Member of Parliament Edward Seaga, will try to beat his opposite number, in trying to become the next MP for the constituency.

The JLP has held the seat for the past 40 years.

A victory for Mr. Golding on Wednesday, April 13, will assure him a seat in the House of Representatives. He is also slated to become Leader of the Opposition, taking over from interim Opposition Leader Dr. Ken Baugh.

Last Friday, Mr. Golding resigned from the Senate to prepare for his by-election campaign which he launched last night at the Denham Town square in West Kingston.

He told The Gleaner yesterday that most of the campaigning would be conducted on a house-to-house basis.
