Tornadoes defeat Y-Speedos and twirls to top again

THE TORNADOES Swim Club successfully defended their title at the Tornadoes Swim Club Invitational meet which ended at the weekend at the National Stadium Pool.

The hosts won the title by romping to 1,288 points ahead of their nearest rivals the Y-Speedos, who ended with 1,077 points.

Nine records were broken over the two-day meet with Kendese Nangle of the Blue Seals following up on her inter-schools performance with two records: the girls' 9-10 50m backstroke in a time of 37.69 seconds, shattering the eight-year-old Allison Bardowell record of 38.05. She also broke the 10 and Under 100m freestyle mark in a time of 1:14:99, erasing the old record of 1:15:49.

Blue Seals also had a record breaker n the form of Antoine Young, who set a meet record of 45.66 seconds, erasing the time of 47.34 in the boys' 8 and Under 50m breaststroke.

Jamaica's CARIFTA team members were also in fine form as Travis Forte set a meet record in the boys' 11 & Over 200m butterfly with a time of 2:19:58 and Brad Hamilton continued making a name for himself on the local scene by breaking in the boys' 13 & Over 400m free record in a time of 4:26:67.

Daniel Harris of the Y-Speedos, Jason-Craig Burnett and Stefani Webley of the Royal Swim Club also etched their names in the record books along with the Tornadoes Swim Club team of Garrick Robinson, Travis Forte, Dave Smith and Brad Hamilton, who came together to break the boys' 13 & Over 200m freestyle relay mark in a time of 1:43:74, just eking past the old time of 1:43:86.

At the end of the meet Blue Seals, who had some marvellous individual performances found themselves well off the pace in third place with just 346 points.
