Not the time to oppose
published: Sunday | March 27, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

NOW Is not the time for Mr. Delroy Chuck of the Opposition to talk about Jamaica's image being tarnished if the army is called out to help stem the carnage that is taking place. The country's image is already tarnished. Members of the Opposition, do not oppose for the sake of opposing. Now is the time to form a coalition of both parties for the sake of Jamaica.

Whenever there is a crisis situation in the most powerful nation to the north of us, isn't the National Guard called out to help the police? Are we crazy at this time to talk about 'training the police' to deal with a most urgent situation in which our children are being slaughtered? It is imperative that immediate and decisive action be taken - now!

Suggestions: How about undercover activities by police in plainclothes, use of intelligence and offering of money to lead them to the miscreants, and if all else fails, while everyone is asleep in the areas that are suspect, surprise them, flush them out and retrieve the weapons where possible? Yes, the human rights groups will have their say but they need to be ignored in this time of dire emergency.

It is high time the politicians take responsibility for most of what is happening - after all a great deal of the violence is politically motivated. Stop the squabbling and do something about the situation now!

I am, etc.,
