RUSTENBURG, South Africa (CMC):THE WEST Indies women lost their second game of the eighth Women's World Cup yesterday when they went down by 79 runs to title hopefuls Australia at Olympia Park.
After managing to dismiss the Australians for 230 in 49.2 overs, the regional women struggled from the start and were eventually bowled out for 151 in 48.3 overs.
Karen Rolton slammed 69 from 82 balls and opener Lisa Keightley scored 56 to set up the match nicely for Australia while medium pacer Envis Williams was again the pick of the
West Indies bowlers with three for 38. Pamela Lavine took two for 45.
LITTLE RESISTANCE
In the Windies innings, only Juliana Nero with 40 and
Shane de Silva, 29, put up any resistance against the miserly Australian bowlers.
In search of their first win of the tournament, the West Indies were pegged back early as their openers Nelly Williams and Indomatie Goordial found scoring difficult against the Australian bowlers.
Williams' 24 required 57 runs and Goordial needed 51 balls for her eight as the West Indies crawled to 29 in the 16th over before Goordial finally succumbed.
The West Indies added just 10 runs in the next five overs before Williams eventually fell with the score on 39, while Nadine George (6) fell shortly afterward with just eight runs added.
However, Nero and Pamela Lavine provided some hope for the West Indies by adding 31 in 49 balls for the fourth wicket. But after Lavine had scored 10, which included a well-struck six, she perished leaving the Windies to rebuild again.
Nero, whose 40 lasted a painstaking 140 balls and included four boundaries, was finally out with the score on 105 in the 38th over with the West Indies still requiring over 10 runs an over to reach their target.
The tall order proved too much for them and thereafter, only de Silva's 39-ball 29 hinted, if only briefly, at an upset.
For Australia, offspinner Lisa Sthalekar grabbed two for 16 while Rolton returned to get two for 23 with her left-arm medium pace, to claim the Player-of-the-Match award.
Earlier, Keightley and Sthalekar gave Australia a sound start, sharing 53 for the first wicket before Rolton joined Keightley to add a further 54 for the second wicket.
However, it was the third wicket stand of 73 between Rolton and Melanie Jones (27 from 33 balls) that put Australia firmly in control of the game.
