'Don't judge me by my looks!'
published: Monday | March 28, 2005

WOMEN, HOW many times have you seen a man and dismissed him as too full of himself because he has that self-assured look? Are first impressions accurate? Do they really tell you the story of the other person?

Last week we asked men to comment on the picture of four women. This week, we turned the tables and again went streetside in Kingston to ask women to comment on the pictures of four men that we have put in various categories.

'THE AGEING LOTHARIO - Keith Anthony Cousins, 55, businessman/dance instructor at Jankoono Lounge

COMMENTS FROM WOMEN

  • He seems like a fun-loving person. Looks like he loves to party, loves going to (night) clubs, loves art and maybe he is a Latin dancer. I say that because of his posture and he seems to be of Asian descent and probably about 45 years old. - Ruth Wilson, over 35, teacher

  • He seems jovial, although it's a photo and maybe he was told to smile. But you can see that it comes naturally. - Kenesha Burnett, 23, student

  • Looks like he's fun, loves to sport (going out). He looks about 45, looks rich from the clothes he wears, but can't definitely say because he might dress nicely, but has no money. - Delrose Simon, 37, housewife

  • Looks like a 'ginal' (deceiver), his facial features say it. - Sandra Williams, 40, vendor

Cousins' friend Michelle Dawson says ...

I have known Keith for four years and he is someone everybody loves. He is friendly, fair, doesn't discriminate, always pleasant, patient, and willing to assist with anything. He is just a great person to know.

    Cousins says about himself ...

I am a very determined person, and a fighter, no matter the cost or objection. I like to be around people; I'm very spontaneous, energetic, I am always excited about new things and I'm very adventurous. I can see where people may think I'm a deceiver, but I'm not. I don't play those kind of games very well because I will always get caught.

THE RUDE BOY - Orlando Duhaney, 26, systems administrator, CMP Solutions

    COMMENTS FROM WOMEN

  • He looks insecure, like he thinks a lot about and is very conscious of what people are thinking about him. A bit of a show off. - Suzette Martin, 30, PhD student

  • Looks self confident, seems to take care of his body. I think he loves women and likes to chat up women.- Elena Lebris, 26, teacher

  • Girls man. He loves to show off , is a bit superficial. He has a nice face that looks kind, loves to give jokes. - Sofy Luno, 25, teacher

  • Easy going and laid back, Jamaican ragamuffin, girls' guy. - Desrine Bougle, 28, lecturer

Duhaney's friend of 14 years, Andre Ford says ...

He's outgoing, very athletic, a conversationalist. He has a way with the ladies and he's very eccentric.

    Duhaney says about himself ...

I'm very easy going and easy to please. I'm a mix; I'll give you anything you want. I give women what they need. But people categorise me as a Mr. Cool.

THE UPTOWN GUY - Craig Constantine, 20, salesman at Wintrader Limited, Dominica Drive, New Kingston

    COMMENTS FROM WOMEN

  • Looks like a player, but a very sweet person on the inside. He seems as though he likes lots of females and he is pretty handsome. - Natrine Kilburn-Praw, 30, store manager:

  • He looks like an uptown guy who takes care of himself. His hands are well manicured and he looks like a dancer and is very fashionable. - Sandra Williams, mid-twenties, civil servant:

  • Looks like a quiet person who likes to smile a lot. He seems sociable and a middle class person. - Opal Wallace, 35, administrative assistant

  • He looks flashy and an uptown guy. The ladies would fall for him. - Stephanie Morgan, 38, secretary

  • He looks sure of himself, honest, but he may think every woman would want him. - Deniese Forrester, 43, legal secretary:

Constantine's friend Emma Subratie, 21, warehouse manager at Abduls Trading, downtown Kingston, says ...

I have known Craig for about three years and he is such a sweet person. He is very cute, but he is not cocky. However, he is very confident and likes to try new things; presently he is learning to Latin dance.

    Constantine says about himself ...

I am very shy, laid back person. I am not really outgoing, but I am adventurous at times. Also, I am very honest and a loyal friend. Though some people may think I look like a player, I am not, because I don't like to hurt women. Also, I am a one-woman guy.

THE PROFESSIONAL - Douglas Harrisingh, 24, public relations officer at the Hilton Hotel, New Kingston

    COMMENTS FROM WOMEN

  • Looks like a flirt and is very particular about his looks. He dresses well and looks very professional. - Shawna Mckenzie, 22, student

  • Confident with a genuine smile, attractive, looks feisty and unapproachable, looks like the professional type, very decent.- Joni-Gaye Cawley, 24, telephone operator

  • He looks like he has a sense of humour, looks kinda shy, looks like a very caring person and a professional. - Tanika Hannam, 21, student

  • The guy next door. Friendly, pleasant, well put together. - Kellena Beckford, 24, security guard

Harrisingh's friend Lisa Sasso who has known him for seven years says ...

He's one of the few good guys out there. He always makes me laugh and when people meet him for the first time they always thinks he's very down to earth. He's not fussy. He's not the boy next door because that would be your average Joe and he's more than that. He's a cross between the business man and husband-to-be. He's the husband type.

    Harrisingh says about himself ...

I'm a pretty quiet and reserved person, simple and not into the excitement and hype.
