Justice Harris acts on Appeal Court bench
published: Tuesday | March 29, 2005

Mrs. Justice Hazel Harris has been appointed to act on the Court of Appeal bench in place of Mr. Justice Howard Cooke who is going on vacation.

Her appointment will mark the first time in Jamaica's history that two women would sit on the Court of Appeal bench at the same time. The acting appointment takes effect on April 4.

Mrs. Justice Harris is the third woman to be appointed to the Court of Appeal. There are seven judges on the Court of Appeal bench.

Mrs. Justice Madge Morgan was the first woman appointed to sit on the Court of Appeal bench. She retired more than 10 years ago and died last year.

Mrs. Justice Zaila McCalla was the second woman to be appointed to act on the Court of Appeal bench. She began acting last year and is still acting.
