New agri strategy soon says Clarke
published: Tuesday | March 29, 2005

AGRICULTURE MINISTER Roger Clarke says a new agriculture strategy will shortly be implemented for the period 2005 to 2008.

He says the strategy will include policies that will position the sector to increase production levels. Mr. Clarke was speaking on Sunday on the first day of the two-day 18th annual St. Mary Agri Expo in Oracabessa.

"This arrangement will underpin and advance the objectives of a sustainable rural development strategy," he said.

A number of programmes are to be undertaken to improve agriculture including the construction of a 'mother farm' at Iterboreale, St. Mary with satellite operation to produce ornamental fish for export. The operation will cost $10 million and will produce 8,000 to 17,000 boxes of ornamental fish annually over a five-year period.
