Ministry breaks ground for new transport centre tomorrow
published: Tuesday | March 29, 2005

The Ministry of Transport and Works will be breaking ground tomorrow for the construction of a new $435 million modern transport centre on lands at Eastwood Park Road and North Odeon Avenue in St. Andrew.

The centre will be the first of its kind in Jamaica and is expected to offer all the conveniences of a modern transit station. It will also be the principal bus terminus for the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) in the Corporate Area.

absence of bathrooms

Robert Pickersgill, minister of transport and works, said earlier this month that the construction of the transportation centre became necessary as too many commuters have to brave the elements. He said there was now an absence of bathrooms for the travelling public and this was one area that would be dealt with when the centre is built.

The contract for the project has been awarded to Transurb Technirail, an overseas multi-national construction firm, and is to be completed in 30 months.

The ministry, in an advertisement in The Sunday Gleaner, said that during the period of construction, there would be changes in the flow of traffic in the Half-Way Tree area. Through the National Works Agency, it will be alerting the public about the traffic changes as they are scheduled.

The new transportation centre is part of the ministry's plans to overhaul public transportation in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region.
