Helping hand
published: Tuesday | March 29, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It is imperative that we highlight the good that is happening around us, as there are so many persons who are so frustrated, who feel that there is no hope for us as Jamaicans. In view of this, there are many who have become so selfish and find it very hard to help their brothers and sisters who are in dire need and make life miserable for others to live.

But, I would like to share a story. On the No. 4 Government bus that plies from Portmore to Half-Way Tree travelling on the downtown route before it reaches Half-Way Tree there travels a gentleman who is handicapped and who works at the office of the Services Commission. His space on the bus is highly recognised by everyone. He has a smile that would brighten any day. If the bus is full to its capacity and you venture to sit, then you are being reminded that, that is the seat of Omar Brown.

What is very outstanding and heart-warming is the manner in which three gentlemen, Colin Moody, Robert Brown (no relation to Omar) and Omari Henry, who also travel on the bus, take it as their special duty to lift Omar and put him in his seat, right behind the driver, while one of them puts the wheelchair at the back of the bus.

You can see the pride on their faces every morning just to greet their fellow co-worker and make sure that he is very comfortable.

May God bless them as they do this good deed every morning and to be reminded that whatever they do will not go in vain.

I am etc,

BARBARA DIXON
