The Editor, Sir:
I happened to see part of the programme 'Our Voices' on CVM TV on Monday night of March 21, during which some aspects of
sexuality were being discussed. I was appalled at the level of
irresponsibility displayed by both female hosts in their handling of the programme.
There were two young ladies on the programme who said they were virgins, having chosen to wait until they were married before having sex. Instead of commending the young ladies for their stance, the hosts were trying to convince them that they were missing out on life by not having sex before marriage. They made it appear as if the young ladies were abnormal.
What kind of message are they sending to a teenager or young adult watching the programme? At a time when HIV and
AIDS are spreading throughout Jamaica like wildfire, the last
thing we need is a television
programme ridiculing people
for making responsible sexual
choices. Yes, sex is a wonderful gift from God which He intended for us to enjoy, but only in the
context of marriage. Premarital sex has caused much pain and
suffering from broken homes
and relationships, unwanted
pregnancies, sexually-transmitted infections, such as HIV, emotional and psychological problems and even cancer of the cervix and domestic violence. Much of this could be prevented by advocating abstinence from sex until marriage and faithfulness to one's spouse.
So, I would like to commend those two young ladies for the stand they have taken for right living. I am confident that if they persevere, when the time is right God will reward them for their faithfulness with wonderful,
loving spouses and happy
marriages.
