Health expo for all ages
published: Tuesday | March 29, 2005

HEALTH, FITNESS and rejuvenation takes centre stage April 9 and 10 at the Hilton Hotel in an expo which combines over 10 workshops and an exhibition of booths offering tips and goods for sale.

The expo has been tagged, 'Forever Young, Health Fitness and Rejuvenation for All Ages'.

"The expo is intended to serve the growing segment of Jamaicans who are seeking ways to transform their lifestyles to one which is healthier, Marcia Sepaul, managing director of Corporate Services Ltd. said. "Worldwide, wellness has gained a significant following and here in Jamaica, interest is growing daily. This expo is about providing information in some of the areas which is embodied in the wellness concept, plus a little bit more."

MENOPAUSE

The main health topic is menopause. On Saturday at 12.30, there will be a two-session segment on this subject delivered by Dr. Fay Whitbourne, President of the Menopause Society of Jamaica and Dr. Errol Daley, gynaecologist. It will examine peri-menopause, menopause and Osteoporosis.

A critical health area which will be under discussion is the growing problem of obesity in Jamaica. Dr. Aggrey Irons, psychiatrist, will provide some insights on how and why we eat and point the way to techniques to improve dieting success. Nutritionist, Pat Thompson, will follow with a look at the importance of good nutrition to weight control, the hair and the skin.

"Interaction is the goal of the workshops and time has been set aside for attendees to have their questions answered. Plus, there is follow through in the exhibition hall on some topics. For example, bone loss is a consequence of menopause and the public is being offered bone density tests at half price. The test is painless and the results will be interpreted by Dr. Whitbourne. body mass index can be
measured at the Nestle booth, as well," Miss Sepaul said.

"A critical aspect of wellness is peace of mind, an element of which is self esteem, how we feel about ourselves at many
levels, including how we look," she said. These sessions include skin, hair care and exercise options.

SKIN CARE

Typical of all the sessions, the skin care segment will be led by an expert, Dr. Frances Berry, a dermatologist, who will look at skin problem from the teen years to well beyond and some of the options available. Karrelle Ashley, Jamfit Instructor will tell her audience how to embrace exercise as a way of life and demonstrate exercise using the Hula hoop, pilates and the ball.

The first session of the two-day event is a hands-on introduction to Yoga by Didi Ananda Ragamaya, a yogic nun of Ananda Marga on Saturday at 10.30 a.m. The organisers are encouraging the public to bring a towel, wear loose clothing, and join in the session or just to sit and listen.
