Why not a national campaign against crime
published: Thursday | March 31, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I RECALL the massive outpouring of support for the 'Save the Dollar' campaign sometime ago initiated by Gordon 'Butch' Stewart, Dr Leachim Semaj and others.

As far as I can recall, it was deemed to be a resounding success. It reached the very core of people's nationalistic values.

What prevents us from achieving similar results with the campaign against crime and violence in Jamaica?

Age has taught me that the average man in the street wants peace and an acceptable level of safety, security and a decent quality of life. He also looks to persons whom he deems as leaders to help to achieve these goals.

The immense power of the media to achieve whichever agenda needs to be purported is without question. Just look at the American media.

To everyone who now sits on different sides of the political divide and criticise each other, those who gloat over the setbacks to the CSME, and to the so-called human rights activists, I ask, where is your intellect, creativity and desire to be part of the solution?

I am, etc.,
