Commissioner to testify at extradition hearing
published: Friday | April 1, 2005

COMMISSIONER OF Police, Lucius Thomas, is to testify next week Wednesday at the extradition hearing of St. Ann businessman, Norris 'Deedo' Nembhard.

Nembhard, 52, is wanted by the United States Government to face trial in relation to drug charges in the U.S.

Nembhard's lawyer, Frank Phipps, had applied for Assistant Commissioner of Police Reggie Grant to testify Thursday in relation to a letter from the local police which was written in April 2003 that they did not have any interest in Nembhard.

NOT MAKER OF DOCUMENT

The letter had stated that the local police had no knowledge of the U.S. Government's request for Nembhard's extradition. However, Resident Magistrate Martin Gayle ruled that ACP Grant could not testify in relation to the letter because he was not the maker of the document.

Commissioner Thomas, who allegedly wrote the letter when he was deputy commissioner of police, will be called to testify when the hearing continues on Wednesday.

Nembhard was held last year May in St. Ann and is in custody awaiting the outcome of the extradition proceedings which are taking place in the Corporate Area Criminal Court.
