Si Mi Trial for 1000 Guineas classic
published: Friday | April 1, 2005

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

THANKS TO a stunning upset by HEZA RANKING at 23-1 in the seventh race at Caymanas Park on Easter Monday, the Pick-9 survived the day's racing.

The precious few who had HEZA RANKING were taken out by OH NO GRANDPA at 9-1 in the very next race, ensuring a carryover of $1 million. Five with eight each received $19,599.00.

Meanwhile, the Pick-9 embraces races three to 11 on tomorrow's Guineas Day programme, while the Super-6 commences from race six to 11. We look at the Super-6.

It kicks off with a 5-y-o and up straight five race to be contested by 10 moderate campaigners, including leading lights APACHE BRAVE, PRINCESS BIANCA, LA CHICA BONITA and SAMFIE.

Noel Ennevor's APACHE BRAVE will more than likely start favourite, following his close third to UNQUESTIONABLE over 1100 metres on February 12.

Still, SAMFIE who was fifth to RUNDUMPLINRUN over the straight last Saturday, is long overdue for a winning effort and with only 51.0kg, gets a
glorious opportunity to do so.

SI MI TRIAL, who is unbeaten in three starts, represents a five-star banker in the seventh race, the $2.25 million 1000 Guineas over 1600 metres for native-bred three-year-old fillies.

The speedy filly from the stables of Wayne DaCosta continues to burn up the track at exercise and given her fine speed and abundance of class, should win from VICTORIA and HAIL THE I.

TWIN DANGERS

BATTLEOX, who was a fast-finishing second to QUIET STRENGTH in the Easter Sprint Cup on Monday, is tipped to go one better in the eighth race where HEARTOFAMAVERICK and BANJUHAR are twin dangers.

The highly thought of debutante DON'T STAY NAKED (working well) from the DaCosta stables has little to beat in the ninth

However, the 10th the 2000 Guineas to be contested by 11 colts and geldings over 1600 metres, should resolve into an interesting three-cornered tussle involving last season's champion, two-year-old KAMIR (Winston Griffiths), stable-companion COLTRANE (Charles Hussey) and MIRACLE MAN with champion jockey Trevor Simpson riding for the legendary trainer Billy Williams.

Simpson replaces the colt's customary rider Allen Maragh whose right instep was stepped on by a horse on Easter Monday. As a result, Maragh has been sidelined with a broken ankle and will be out of action for over a month.

Richard Azan's KAMIR, who defeated both MIRACLE MAN and COLTRANE by a length when they last met in the Supreme Ventures Jamaica 2-Y-O Stakes on Boxing Day, came back to win the recent trial (Prince Consort Stakes) over 1400 metres in the smart time of 1:25.0 on March 12 and the front running son of Prime Rate Powers should stave off the MIRACLE MAN who also impressed over a mile on his February 26 seasonal debut, clocking a fast 1:38.1.
