Red Stripe Championship set to begin

THE MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR Red Stripe Cricket Championship bowls off today with six matches across the island, starting at 10:00 a.m.

In today's matches, former champions Boys' Town will tackle St. Ann in the feature match at Collie Smith Drive.

In other matches, St. James face Clarendon at Jarrett Park, Police challenge Portland at Elletson Road, Hanover travel to Bounty Hall to play Trelawny, Kingston & St. Andrew oppose St. Thomas at Maxfield Park, and Westmoreland entertain Young Jamaica (Jamaica Under-19) at Allan Rae Oval.

The Jamaica Youth team has been included in the championship for developmental purposes to gain preparation for the upcoming regional series.

Teams will play one another once for a total of 11 matches.

Teams will be going in search of the $200,000 first prize money and most importantly, the two available spots for promotion to next season's Supreme Ventures Super League.

Each team got $100,000 to offset transportation, accommodation and meal costs, and there are a host of other cash incentives for teams and individuals.

The teams earn $10,000 for an outright win, $5,000 for first innings points, while batsmen scoring a century and bowlers taking 10 or more wickets in a match will earn $10,000.

There are also $5000 awards for players taking five wickets or more in an innings.

Meanwhile, the Young Jamaica squad for today's opening match is: Captain Jamie Trenchfield (KC), Ziggy Levy (Holmwood), Alton Beckford (STETHS), Damion Ebanks (STETHS), Dennis Bulli (Kensington), Andre Clarke (Vere), Duran McLeod (STETHS), Nickoy Samuels (STETHS), Andre McCarthy (Holmwood), Richard Thomas (STETHS), Jason Dawes (STETHS) and Chris Vassell (Vere).
