GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC:
WEST INDIES coach Bennett King believes the ongoing impasse that has crippled regional cricket is just one of the challenges associated with the evolution of world cricket.
The Australian, who is leading the team in his first home series, believes the current sponsorship impasse is a situation that is in keeping with the recent trend in world cricket.
"I honestly think that in any cricketing nation's evolvement, some of these things have to be sorted out, it has happened before in Australia and other places," King said after the
second day's play was abandoned because of fading light yesterday at Bourda.
"It's just part of the evolvement of cricket and the direction that cricket is going at the moment. We all have to be patient with it and make sure both sides are really settled."
The Windies continued where they left off on day one, compiling a mammoth 543 for five declared with opener Wavell Hinds scoring 213 while
captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul
hammered an unbeaten 203.
King said he was impressed by the marathon innings by both players but said he was still not yet totally satisfied with the match fitness of the team.
"We are not happy with
the standards (fitness) at the moment and if we want to
compete day in day out for a whole Test series we need
to keep reproducing those
performances, next Test and the
following Test and even in the second innings," King said.
"It is no good being able to do things just on a first innings basis. In Test cricket the game goes for five days."
