THE EDITOR, Sir:MANY ARGUE that the use of condoms will stem the spread of STDs especially the killer AIDS. Yet a report coming out of the Philippines indicates that despite an anti-condom campaign promoted by a Roman Catholic arm there, they have a significantly lower incidence of AIDS. The same report indicates that Thailand which has condoms readily available and accessible to its residents has a very high incidence of AIDS. It does not seem as if condom use in Jamaica is winning the battle against AIDS either.
But really, why are we advertising the necessity for condoms when going to Jamaica Carnival? If patrons are just going to dance and have fun (for want of a
better expression) then why are they being encouraged to 'bring your condom come'?
Something must be wrong if persons are primed for sex in this nation. It seems that the ad is not just about being prepared for sex but it is really promoting lack of self-control and wanton sex. What kind of a nation are we if we walk with condoms in our wallets, backpockets, purses 'just in case'? Is that what sexual intercourse is all about a just-in-case event, a one-night affair, a one dance or jig?
How can we foster parenting skills in an atmosphere that makes so light a matter of intimacy between partners? What foundation are we laying for our children to see and follow? The essence of parenting lies on the foundation of commitment and love between partners as well as of the offspring produced. We seem to only plan for the sexual moment but never examine the implications of the 'thereafter'.
Let the only 'big dogs' in this country be ones that walk on four legs.
I am, etc.
