Kevins pose big threat
published: Monday | April 4, 2005

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

WATERHOUSE AND Portmore United will be depending mainly on two Kevins to secure victory in tonight's second End-of-Round final at the National Stadium at 8:00p.m.

Kevin Lamey of Waterhouse and Kevin "Joycie" Deerr of Portmore will undoubtedly be the main attackers who will be carrying the hopes of two of the hottest teams in this round of the Wray and Nephew National Premier League (NPL).

Deerr, 24, has been hugely responsible for the terrific run by Portmore United in which they rattled up seven consecutive wins to qualify for the final with a game to spare.

The red-hot Deerr February's Player-of-the-Month has surged to the top of the goalscoring chart with 12 goals, the same as Jermaine Anderson of Wadadah, with Lamey just behind on 10 goals.

GOALSCORING MACHINE

After switching from attacking midfield to forward, Deerr netted eight goals in seven consecutive games, transforming himself into a goalscoring machine.

Deerr, who represented Mona High in the Manning Cup before switching to Clarendon College, in an earlier Gleaner interview pointed to the key element of his new-found success as the forward position he is now playing.

"I find myself in an easier position to score. In a sense, it has taken a lot of pressure off me. Somebody has to create for me now more than when I had to create," he noted.

Meanwhile Lamey, as usual, has been the key motivational factor behind Waterhouse's successes over the years, and if they are successful today he could be the one leading from in front.

PROVEN ABILITY

Lamey, a former Kingston Technical Manning Cupper, is the third leading scorer this season.

The veteran striker should be partnered up front by Richard West and Roberto Fletcher, but he will be the one who Waterhouse fans will be looking to secure victory for the Drewsland community, based on his proven ability to come good on the big occasion.

The last time Lamey scored in a final was in last year's Jamaica National-sponsored knockout competition, scoring the decider against Harbour View.

If Waterhouse are going to win then Lamey will have to play a huge part, either by scoring or creating goals. His impact is definitely needed.
