My 11-y-o son wets his bed
published: Wednesday | April 6, 2005

Dear Counsellor,

MY ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD son has started to wet his bed. His teachers report that he has been behaving aggressively toward other children and I noticed that he has fallen off in his school work. I am very concerned as he has GSAT next year. His father and I separated two years ago and I am wondering if this could be the problem.

Dear Reader,

It would appear as if the separation is affecting your child. When children are depressed or are going through major adjustments they may display change in behaviour, they may exhibit regressive behaviour such as bed wetting and thumb sucking and you may see change in their school performance.

Be gentle and understanding with your child. Have patience and understand that the child is affected as much as you are by the separation. I would suggest that you take your child to see a psychologist or to the nearest child guidance clinic. It would certainly be wise to see his teacher or guidance counsellors so that they aware of the difficulties your family may be experiencing.

Our counsellors are here for you. You may write them at : Your Health, c/o The Gleaner, 7 North Street, Kingston; email: yourhealth@gleanerjm.com.
