Double murder in Hanover
published: Wednesday | April 6, 2005

WESTERN BUREAU:

THE PARISH of Hanover was hit by yet another double murder on Monday night when a young welder and a middle-age farmer, were both shot and killed by an unknown assailant along the Shettlewood main road in the parish.

The dead men have been identified as Marcus Granstan, 29, of Katon Lane, in Mount Salem, Montego Bay, and Joseph 'Mass Joe' Meyler, 55, of Burnt Ground, in Hanover. Granstan, who was on his way back to St. James after visiting relatives in Hanover, is the brother of St. James' most wanted man Michael Granstan.

REPORTS OF SHOTS

According to police reports, shortly after 9:00 p.m Monday, residents of the Shettlewood area called the nearby Ramble Police Station and reported that they heard shots being fired along the main road. A unit was promptly dispatched to the area.

When the police arrived at Shettlewood, they found Granstan slumped over the steering wheel of his black Nissan pick-up van with a bullet wound to the left side of his face while Mr. Meyler, who had hitched a ride, was found dead in the back of the vehicle with a bullet wound to his left eye.

"When we got there (Shettlewood), the headlights on the van were on and the engine was running," said a Sergeant from the Ramble Police station. "We believe the person who did the shooting was travelling in the van as the right hand passenger door was open wide."

Since the start of the year, Hanover has had 13 murders including a double murder on a construction site in February and another in the Jericho area last month. Last year, the parish, which was once considered the safest in the island, had a total of 14 murders.
