Canadian answers to fraud charges
published: Wednesday | April 6, 2005

Barbara Gayle, Staff Reporter

MAURICE GABAY, financial controller, employed to the Canadian company McGill Construction Company Ltd., appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday on fraud charges.

Senior Resident Magistrate Martin Gayle offered him bail in the sum of $1 million with sureties for him to return to court on April 17.

The Crown is alleging that on December 10 last year, Gabay, a Canadian, cashed a cheque for $3 million by forging the signature of Joseph Gustadat, a Canadian who is the owner of the construction company.

OTHER ALLEGATIONS

It is further alleged that Gabay ordered $600,000 worth of building material from several businesses and diverted them to a building site which was not connected with his employer's company.

The irregularities were discovered by the company which called in the Fraud Squad. Gabay was subsequently arrested and charged.
