THE EDITOR, Sir:
CABLE & WIRELESS Jamaica and Supreme Venture Jamaica has not won respect and admiration in their public statement to 'disassociate' themselves from the offensive utterances made during the performance of certain artistes appearing at the "Last Hurrah' concert of Jamaica Carnival" an apology warranted only because it was broadcasted live on national television.
Not beating down these events, but the 'bring your condom', wild abandon of carnival (and the dancehall) lends itself to utterances and human displays that disregard public decency, good taste and moral sensibility.
But, products are sold and profit is made, so the bitten sponsors should spare us the apology, as they will do it again next year.
LIFE-SAVING WORK
If you seek the "reinforcement of positive values and wholesome conduct", as your statement said, then put your big money behind groups like the Jamaica Folk Singers, the University Singers and others, behind the upcoming festival events, behind some positive music events, secular or religious, even if they do not drive the sales of your products.
Sponsor the life-saving work of individuals like Father Ho Lung and the Brothers and Sisters of Mercy.
Support less of the 'skin out culture', called music videos, aired on TVJ and CVM and more wholesome and positive local music presentations.
I am, etc.,
CLAUDE WILSON
