New bishop of Kingston elected
published: Friday | April 8, 2005

REV. CANON Robert McLean Thompson, 57-year-old rector of the St. Andrew Parish Church, was elected on March 30 as bishop of Kingston by the 135th Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, which was held over two days at the Starfish Resort, Falmouth.

Bishop-elect Thompson was the only candidate. However, church rules required that an election still be conducted and that the successful candidate receive a two-third majority in each house of clergy and laity into which the assembly is divided. Two ballots were permitted. Canon Thompson was elected on the first ballot, gaining 77 votes from 105 of the clergy, and 193 from 220 of the laity.

CONGRATULATIONS

The bishop-elect was welcomed and congratulated by the bishop of Montego Bay, Rev. Dr. Howard Gregory. Other speakers later added their quota of congratulations.

Soon after, the results were announced. Canon Thompson also spoke to the archbishop of the West Indies, the Most Rev. Drexel Gomez at Provincial Headquarters in Nassau, Bahamas.
