'Junglists' scrape past 'Perfectos'
published: Friday | April 8, 2005

CHIN-SUE

ARNETT GARDENS were made to struggle to make it to the quarter-finals of the Red Stripe Champions Cup after a heart-stopping penalty shoot-out with Manchester's Los Perfectos at Brooks Park yesterday.

Arnett and Los Perfectos, who had played to a 2-2 draw in the first-leg at Arnett Gardens were made to suffer through a painful 0-0 scoreline after 120 minutes of football.

Arnett, however, held their nerve and managed to win the shoot-out with one penalty still untaken.

GAME SEALED

The 3-2 scoreline at the end of penalties was brought about after Patrick Beech, Ray Graham and Kwame Richards put away their spot-kicks under pressure after Cornel Chin-Sue's miss. Los Perfectos, in response, missed their first penalty and had two spot-kicks saved by Julian McLeish.

In the game between Arlington and Portmore United at the Prison Oval, the consensus was that the former had already made it to the next round, having a 5-0 cushion from the first leg.

However, nobody told Arlington that, and playing against a watered down Portmore unit, they set about reducing the massive deficit.

They couldn't have asked for a better start as Valentine Gardner put the hosts ahead after only five minutes.

Portmore were then put into a further spot of bother when a well-taken 30th minute strike from Dwayne Gowe put the newest Wray and Nephew National Premier League team two goals ahead.

However, Arlington were to get no closer as the two-leg tie ended 5-2 in favour of the Premier League's mid-season final winners.

Over at Frome, Reno had no problems taking advantage of their 3-0 cushion against Holland Police. Reno comfortably emerged with a 1-0 win to take the tie 4-0.

Meanwhile, in the day's late game, goals from Baris Johnson and Roberto Fletcher added to Waterhouse's 1-0 first-leg advantage over Boy's Town.
