BUSINESSMAN, SCIENTIST, sportsman ... The president of the Jamaica Exporters' Association (JEA) Dr. Andre Gordon is a man for all seasons.
Professionals know him as the very efficient businessman who has restored a sense of identity to the JEA. In fact, he considers this one of his greatest achievements in his business career next to launching his own business, Technological Solutions Limited in 1996.
Honoured to be in his second term as president, since appointed to the JEA in year 2003, Dr. Gordon said, "I think we have managed to establish the JEA as one of the prime organisations for investors who want to develop business in trade."
"They have relatively easy access and facility to this," he added pointing out that the JEA has partnered with sectors such as tourism and entertainment to bring on board a wider export community.
However, exported from his professional arena, you will find Dr. Gordon equally dedicated to a lifestyle that seems diametrically opposed to his jacket and tie image .
SPORTS ENTHUSIAST
This becomes more apparent on his weekends.
The sports enthusiast is often seen outdoors in very casual attire jogging around the neighbourhood, or exercising on his machine at home. Watching sports also forms a big part of his the weekends.
An accomplished sportsman who once represented his country in volley ball, he is serious about his physical well being. "I try to keep fit and exercise four or five times per week," said Dr. Gordon as he shared how he spends his weekends with Sunday Business.
Since his average work day spans 16 hours, and includes travelling overseas, he makes a point of relaxing with friends on Friday evenings or getting up as early as 6:30am on Saturday mornings to jog.
Dr. Gordon remains devoted to his family and likes to spend as much time as possible with them over the weekend. "Most Saturdays, I do some work normally early or late afternoons but I may go to a play or a movie from time to time with my wife Dianne and children Adrian and Zöe," he said. This usually takes place one weekend per month. Some weekends, he accompanies his daughter to karate tournaments out of town.
"I try to catch up on the business news and international news by scanning various channels and reading the papers," he said, describing some of his Saturday evenings.
TV takes up a good part on his Sundays. The day starts off with exercise. By mid morning, he is either watching a good discussion programme or enjoying himself watching a game of American football, something he learnt to appreciate having spent three years studying in Canada.
