Samuels and Baugh lead charge
published: Sunday | April 10, 2005

Daraine Luton, Freelance Writer

SIDELINED WEST Indies players Carlton Baugh Jnr. and Marlon Samuels will lead Melbourne's quest for first innings points when play resumes in their first-round Supreme Ventures Super Cup game against Kensington at Kensington Park today.

Faced with a formidable 275 all out made by Kensington, who won the toss and batted, Melbourne went to bed on 128-4 with Samuels and Baugh on 12 runs each.

Melbourne's charge though is taking place on the back of a fine all-round effort from national Under-19 batsman Yannick Elliott who captured three first innings wickets and scored a swashbuckling 58 (11x4, 1x6).

MISSED OUT ON CHANCES

Earlier, Kensington's captain, Samuel Douglas (44), and Damion Foster (47) both missed out on the chance to raise the first half centuries of the competition but they nonetheless helped in bringing some level of respectability to their team's total after the first four wickets fell for only 72 runs.

Douglas' score was amassed after facing 83 deliveries off which he stroked five fours. However, Foster was less sedate in his approach, using only 43 balls to compile his total which included six fours and one six.

At Lucas, St. Mary, staring at the mountainous 340 made by homesters Lucas, were 122-4 at stumps, 218 runs adrift with only six wickets in hand.

Oneil Powell (63), Chris Senior (62) Gary Herbine (40 not out) and Rayan Smith (34) took St. Mary's bowlers to the task in compiling the mammoth total.

Bowling for St. Mary, Tousaint Hassan was the best with 4-85 but when his side batted only Triston Gordon (50) and Dervin Morgan (37not out) had any clue to the Lucas bowling. Chris Senior has so far taken 2-18.

Morgan will resume batting with Ian McLeod (nine not out) this morning.

At Alpart, St. Elizabeth posted 327-8 declared with Howard Powell scoring 58, Dave Legister 54 and Conroy Miller 58. St Catherine CA in reply are 72-3 with Howard Harris not out 44.

At Emmet Park, Manchester had the upper hand over Kingston at stumps last evening. Batting first, Kingston were dismissed for 151 with Andre Dwyer taking five wickets. Manchester are 228-9 with Dwyer unbeaten on 52.

The match between the Jamaica Defence Force and St. Catherine Parish was not played because some of the Soldiers have being called up for military duty.
