UNIVERSITY OF Technology's (UTech) Sherone Simpson and G.C. Foster College's Marrecia James stole the spotlight, but the latter's team retained their female title on the final day of the Inter-Collegiate Championships yesterday at G.C. Foster College, St. Catherine.
G.C. Foster topped the female
section with 201.5 points,
ahead of UTech (184), UWI
(89), EXCED (41), MoBay Community College (20.5), CASE (16), Knox (12), Brown's Town (four) and Church Teacher's College (three).
In the male section, UTech finished on 196 points, 13 ahead of G.C. Foster (183). Then followed EXCED (91), UWI (72), Knox (25), Portmore Community College (18), Church Teacher's College (17), MoBay (17), CASE (four) and Brown's Town (two).
Olympian Simpson was impressive in taking the sprint double.
FOURTH FASTEST TIME
In the 100m, she recorded the fourth fastest time this season, 11.33 seconds to break UWI's Toni-Ann D'Oley's three-year-old mark of 11.89.
On her way to victory, Simpson, defeated G.C. Foster's Danieth Pryce (11.83) and her teammate Yanika Martel (11.90).
Her win in the 200m was equally as impressive as she set another record, 22.89 seconds, again the fourth best time this season, which was good enough to beat her teammate Shericka Williams (23.08) and Pryce (24.72).
James was the meet's only individual triple winner.
The G.C. Foster student won the women's 800m on Friday's opening day in a record 2:17.51 and returned yesterday to capture the 1,500m and 3,000m events.
In the 3,000m, James, who ran 11:21.22, dispatched her teammate Vanessa Whittle (12:01.03) while for the 1,500m title she ran 4:55.45 to beat UTech's Kadian Howell (4:48.87).
Apart from Simpson's double and James' triple, UTech's Evan Allen and Gregory Little, along with G.C. Foster's Ricardo Page were double winners.
Little, a Carifta Games Under-20 champion, won the 400m hurdles in 51.11, beating the G.C. Foster pair of Claude Senior (52.03) and Sheldon Leith (55.11).
In the 400m, Little won in 46.81, relegating G.C. Foster's Orlando Reid (46.90) and EXCED's Michael Gardener (47.32) into second and third.
Allen, who won Friday's 800m in 1:53.61, returned yesterday to run 4:00.99 to beat Alex Morgan of Church Teacher's College (4:01.55) in the 1500m.
Page's double came in the field. He first won the opening day's shot put (14.48) and took yesterday's discus with 42.76m.
Just like Simpson, who helped UTech's to victories in the 4x100m (44.69) over G.C. Foster (46.29) and 4x400m to a record (3:44.86), again over G.C. Foster (3:55.05), Little and Allen were also relay gold medallists.
Collecting the baton five metres behind, Little ran an impressive anchor leg on UTech's mile relay team which won in 3:11.73 over G.C. Foster (3:12.42) while Allen was equally sharp in his team's 1,600m medley win of 3:26.20 over G.C. Foster (3:29.74).
Meanwhile, Asafa Powell looked easy in taking the men's invitational 100m in a wind assisted (3.3mps) 10.08 seconds. Ainsley Waugh, who won heat two, was second overall in 10.47 while their MVP teammate, Barbadian Andre Hinds, was third in 10.56.
Brigitte Foster-Hylton also had an easy victory in 100m hurdles. She ran a comfortable 12.92 seconds to finish ahead of Andrea Bliss (13.47).
Orlando Morgan (10.53) won the men's 100m, beating Kawayne Fisher of G.C. Foster (10.61) and EXCED's Kevin Stewart (10.64).
In other events, Peta-Gaye Beckford threw 40.96m to beat her G.C. Foster College teammate, Shaneka Parkes (38.70m), in the women's javelin.
UTech's Shericka Williams (52.68) and Davita Prendergast (52.91) finished one/two in the women's 400m. It was the same one/two for UTech in the 400m hurdles with Prendergast taking gold in 1:03.05 over stablemate Nadina Marsh (1:03.76).
Marsh took the 100m hurdles in 14.26 over UWI's Yanique Levy (14.95). Alanzo Barrett of EXCED (21.43) took the men's 200m over his teammate Michael Gardener (21.53).
G.C. Foster's Sheldon Leith (14.10) beat UTech's Patrick Lee (14.22) for the 110m hurdles while Jason Elleson (16:03.87) beat UTech's Lawrence Mendez (16:30.32) for the 5,000m crown.
UTech's Kenneth Sylvester (16.12m) won the men's triple jump over teammate Wilbert Walker (15.95m).
