March against crime in Sp Town Churches move to stop bloodshed in the 'Old Capital'
published: Monday | April 11, 2005

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:

HUNDREDS OF Spanish Town Christians marched through the streets yesterday in a move they say is intended to cleanse the streets of the Old Capital of its ongoing bloodshed.

Representing members from churches throughout the town, the marchers started at Munumar Square along French Street, where they stopped and sang. After that they proceeded to Young Street where some non-church members joined in the march. They proceeded along Young Street to the Spanish Town Prison Oval for a mass rally.

The incident-free march took them through some of the most violent areas of the town, despite a minimal police presence.

The Ministers' Fraternal in Spanish Town said at a recent meeting that the march was meant to take Spanish Town back from the hands of criminals. It was decided then that the political hierarchy should be a part of this march as they should know what it is that makes the area so attractive to criminal gunmen.

Spanish Town's Mayor, Dr. Raymoth Notice, as well as several executive members of the Spanish Town Ministers' Fraternal, were among those joining the march. The march took place on the same day that members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Jamaica Defence Force were pulling out of town following a massive clampdown on crime.
